We recommend that you read "Bat Info" in our web site. The information, if applied, should help in your chances of success.
Bat Conservation International recommends this "Bat Approved" Bat Home be mounted facing south. When mounting two homes position them facing North and South.
We offer three suggestions when mounting the "PI" Bat Home(s):
A) Flat mount onto the underside of cement bridges, masonry or wooden structures with sufficient height and solar exposure.
Bridge Mounting (or under eaves) (for the "PI")
Mounting under a bridge, place the bat house on any vertical flat surface that is at least 24" high and a minimum of 10 feet from the ground, more is better. If accessible, we suggest utilizing stainless steel mounting hardware, including (4) stainless steel washers, to prevent deterioration and/or staining. Position the open end down (for the bats to enter and exit). To attract bats to the new house(s) we offer some suggestions:
Don't have underbrush within 15 feet from the bottom of the house(s).
Have a clear flight path to the house(s).
Have the location safely above the high water level.
B) To Mount on a 2" ID - 2 3/8" OD (preferably galvanized) steel pipe; Purchase one 2" (ID) standard wall (schedule 40) galvanized steel pipe, 20 ft. long for the support pole. Utilizing the steel Pivot, (pivot fits your 2"ID - 2 3/8'OD support pole) makes installation of your bat house(s) much easier.
Before mounting, (if you did not purchase a galvanized pipe) paint your black support pipe aluminum to prevent deterioration. Pivot is painted.
At the desired spot dig a hole 16" in diameter and 30" deep. If you are using the pivot system, (for round steel pipe) lower the pivot into the hole and apply concrete. Utilize a level for alignment. Allow sufficient drying time. Unscrew the retaining bolts on the pivot and allow the "stinger" to lay flat. Slide your support pipe onto the stinger. Tighten the bolt on the Top Mount to the support pole and attach the house(s). We recommend using a tractor with a front bucket or backhoe to raise the support pipe. Utilize a load sling or chain that is wrapped tightly at least three times (to keep the sling or chain from slipping). Have the operator to be directly behind the pivot with the front-end bucket or boom up and back up very slowly. The last few inches can be finished by hand. As always, when using equipment, use caution and safety in raising or lowering the support system.
C) Utilize a 4" x 4" x 16' treated wooden pole, (dig hole same as above). Use 1"x4" treated wood (cut to size for top mount) and install onto support pole. Use caution when raising.
